What is the claim about?

Harmful content
On TikTok, "challenges" frequently circulate in which users are encouraged to complete a certain task. There have been multiple fatal accidents involving children, including those caused by the "Blackout Challenge." This is a test of courage in which young people squeeze their air in front of a camera until they fall unconscious. In May 2024, a 13-year-old girl from Germany died after attempting to participate in it.

Privacy violation
TikTok collects and analyzes highly personal and intimate personal data of its users to an extent that goes far beyond what is necessary for the functionality of the app. It tracks its users not only within its own platform, but also beyond it in order to create comprehensive behavioral and personality profiles for advertising and other commercial purposes. This is done in secret, without those affected being aware of the extent of this data processing.

Threat to democracy
TikTok recognizes political interest by checking which politicians, parties or political media a new user follows. The contents are aimed at people with certain political opinions by evaluating, assessing, approving and/or condemning socio-political issues from certain political spectrums and, for example, making recommendations on upcoming election decisions. This results in the risk that the data will be used for manipulation or political persecution of consumers in the future.
Why join this claim?
Protect our society – TikTok is not only acting unlawfully, but also in blatant disregard of the fundamental rights and interests of its users. It is obliged to compensate those affected for the resulting damages.
Protect our children – TikTok is very popular with a younger audience. They have failed to protect children, and exposing them to dangerous challenges that cause lasting damage to their mental and physical health.
Protect your privacy – Misuse or unauthorized use of personal data to target users with advertisement violates privacy laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Together we send a signal – We must end this kind of unlawful actions. Social media platforms like TikTok have the obligation to properly assess and mitigate risks linked to harmful content.
